Ram Shergill

Ram Shergill is an award-winning editorial and advertising photographer, creative director and filmmaker. His work merges fashion narrative and visual communication, encompassing art and technology while exploring questions of identity, performance, and the future sustainable human body. He holds a doctorate in Bio-Integrated Design from UCL’s Bartlett School of Architecture and is guided by a belief that creative practice should contribute meaningfully to society and the environment. His interdisciplinary approach spans visual culture, speculative design, and sustainable innovation.

He is a Senior Lecturer and Deputy Lead in Luxury Business Management at the University for the Creative Arts, where he co-leads fashion research and lectures in Fashion Business Management. His academic research feeds directly into his professional practice, where he helps brands envision and develop novel ways of working with new fashion ecosystems, the bioeconomy, and sustainable supply chain management.

Ram began his career under the mentorship of Isabella Blow and Alexander McQueen, leading to collaborations with designers such as Vivienne Westwood and editorial commissions for Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, The Sunday Times, Wallpaper Magazine, L’Officiel, and W Magazine. His commercial clients include Louis Vuitton, Dior, Gucci, Galeries Lafayette, Selfridges, and Leica Camera, where he served as an ambassador for three years.

His photography and artwork have been exhibited internationally at institutions including Sotheby’s, Somerset House, the Wallace Collection, the Whitechapel Gallery, the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. In 2019, his portraits of Amy Winehouse were acquired by the National Portrait Gallery for their permanent collection, coinciding with the publication of his book Amy by Ram. His creative vision and photographic work are showcased in India Fantastique celebrating couturiers Abu Jani & Sandeep Khosla, published by Thames & Hudson.

Ram is Editor-in-Chief of The Protagonist Magazine, where he leads and creative directs the publication, collaborating with a global network of high-profile contributors. He has delivered keynote talks internationally at prestigious institutions including the University of Oxford, MIT, and UCL, addressing themes such as sustainability, the circular economy, space design, and the future of creative ecosystems.
